I shipped FairSide

I’m in three weekly games with overlapping players and messy team picks, so I built FairSide to make fair teams fast.

I shipped FairSide.

It’s a simple app for creating fair 5v5, 6v6, and 7v7 teams. Built it for my own weekly games, then figured: might as well share it.

Why I built it

I play in three weekly games. There’s a lot of overlap in players, and team selection is usually a mess.

You know the pattern:

  • one team stacked in attack, the other stacked in defence
  • or just wildly mismatched teams overall
  • too much time wasted picking sides

So this was mostly a selfish build. I just wanted our games to start faster and feel fairer.

What it does

Pretty straightforward:

  1. Add players
  2. Pick format (5/6/7-a-side)
  3. Add constraints if needed (keep together / keep apart)
  4. Generate balanced teams

It handles positional balance too (including keepers), which is where a lot of weekly games fall apart.

Why share it

It started as a tool for me and my mates. After a few runs, it felt useful enough that other groups might want it too. So I cleaned it up and shipped it publicly.

What’s next

Honestly, nothing big right now.

I’m giving it to my mates, letting them use it in real games, and seeing what feedback comes back. Then I’ll tighten it up and try to find more users from there.

If your weekly kickabout has the same team-picking chaos, give it a spin: https://www.fairside.app/
